Women's Safety Tips for Travelling Alone in India
4 min read
Small habits that make travelling alone safer, and what to do the moment something feels wrong.
Before you leave
Share your plan with someone you trust: where you are going, how, and when you expect to arrive. Keep your phone charged and carry a power bank on longer trips.
- Save 112, 1091 and 181 in your phone
- Add at least two emergency contacts in SANRAKSH
- Start a Journey so your contacts are told if you don't arrive on time
On the way
Trust your instincts. If a cab, auto or seat feels wrong, you can leave. Check that the vehicle number matches your booking and share the trip details with a contact. Keep your phone within reach rather than at the bottom of a bag.
When something feels wrong
Move toward people and light — a shop, a petrol pump or a crowded platform. Call someone and stay on the line. If you feel unsafe, press SOS or SAVE: your emergency contacts receive your live location straight away.
Numbers worth saving
Women police helpline 1091, women helpline 181, and 112 for any emergency. For cyber harassment or blackmail, call 1930. In Telangana, SHE Teams accept reports on WhatsApp.
After an incident
Tell someone you trust, even if you are unsure about reporting. Keep screenshots, messages and photos. Support is available through helplines even if you decide not to file a complaint immediately.
